The Zero-Ferrous MRI Stretcher Trolley lives up to its name by containing absolutely no ferromagnetic components whatsoever. Every metal element – including locking mechanisms, caster stems, push handle inserts, and hinge pins – is constructed from aluminum, brass, or titanium. This level of material purity makes the trolley safe for use in the most demanding high-field environments, including 3T and emerging 7T research systems.
The patient deck is a single-piece fiberglass laminate with a non-slip textured surface. Unlike multi-layer decks that may hide metal reinforcements, this monolithic construction provides complete transparency regarding material composition. The deck is also radiolucent, permitting portable X-ray without moving the patient. An integrated ruler along both edges helps staff position the patient relative to the scanner’s isocenter.
Antistatic casters are a critical safety feature in this trolley. Each caster uses conductive rubber that dissipates static charge through the floor, preventing spark discharge that could ignite supplemental oxygen or interfere with sensitive RF coils. The caster bearings are ceramic, which are both non-magnetic and exceptionally wear-resistant. Each caster has an independent locking brake that engages with a positive detent – no steel springs are used anywhere in the brake mechanism.
The push handle is ergonomically designed with a rubber grip over a brass core. The handle height is adjustable from 36 to 42 inches using a non-magnetic gas spring and nylon locking collars. This accommodates staff of varying heights and reduces back strain during prolonged transports. Two push handles are provided – one at each end – allowing two-person operation when navigating tight corners or elevator doors.
Weight capacity is 450 pounds, with a safety factor of 4:1. The trolley weighs only 68 pounds itself, making it manageable for single operators. Foldable side rails made of impact-resistant polymer provide patient security during transport; these rails lock into place with non-metallic clips and can be lowered completely for patient transfer onto the scanner table. The rails have been tested to withstand 75 pounds of lateral force without deformation.
Clinical validation studies have been conducted at three major academic medical centers. In a 14-month trial involving over 1,200 MRI transports, the Zero-Ferrous Trolley produced zero safety incidents, zero image artifacts attributable to the stretcher, and zero equipment failures. Staff satisfaction scores averaged 4.8 out of 5, with particular praise for the smooth-rolling casters and intuitive brake controls. The trolley is available in four color options – blue, green, gray, and red – to coordinate with departmental color-coding schemes.
