Function: The Pediatric Tilt-in-Space Non-Magnetic MRI Wheelchair is a smaller version of the adult tilt-in-space chair, designed for children weighing up to 120 pounds. The tilt mechanism allows the entire seat assembly to tilt backward up to 35 degrees, redistributing the child’s weight from the buttocks to the back. The tilt is operated by an attendant using a lever on the back of the chair; the lever requires less force than the adult version (10 pounds vs. 20 pounds) to accommodate pediatric staff. The chair includes a five-point harness (plastic buckles) to keep the child secure during tilt. The seat cushion is contoured for a child’s pelvis, with a slightly elevated front edge to prevent sliding.
Application: This wheelchair is for children with conditions that require pressure relief or positioning support, such as cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury, muscular dystrophy, or post-surgical spine patients. In the MRI setting, these children often cannot sit upright for extended periods while waiting for their scan. The tilt-in-space function allows them to be positioned comfortably, reducing agitation and the need for sedation. The five-point harness ensures that even a child with poor trunk control remains secure during transport and waiting. The chair is also used for children with reflux or feeding tubes; tilting backward after a feed reduces the risk of aspiration during transport to the MRI suite.
