The Non-Magnetic Shower Commode MRI Wheelchair is a three-in-one device: transport wheelchair, shower chair, and commode chair. The chair is constructed entirely of non-magnetic materials (aluminum frame, plastic seat, nylon fasteners) and is waterproof, allowing it to be used in wet environments such as showers or for patients with incontinence. The seat has a large opening (12 inches x 10 inches) for commode use, and a removable plastic insert covers the opening for transport. The chair rolls on casters that are sealed against water ingress (IP67 rating). The backrest has a built-in tilt feature (15 degrees) to allow water to drain away from the patient. The armrests flip up, and the footrests swing away, allowing the chair to be positioned over a toilet or shower bench.
This wheelchair is designed for MRI patients who require assistance with bathing or toileting before their scan. Inpatients may need to shower before coming to the MRI suite (to remove metal-containing lotions or to prepare for a sterile procedure). Patients with incontinence may require toileting immediately before entering the MRI suite to avoid soiling the scanner. This chair allows the patient to be showered or toileted in the same device that will transport them to the MRI, eliminating transfers between devices. The waterproof construction also means that the chair can be cleaned with a hose or in a wash bay, which is more thorough than wiping. The chair is also suitable for use in the MRI suite itself for patients who cannot hold their bladder during a long scan; the commode function allows them to be toileted without leaving the MRI area.
