The Pediatric Non-Magnetic MRI Wheelchair is specifically sized and styled for children weighing up to 120 pounds. The chair features a smaller frame (seat width 14 inches, seat depth 12 inches) and lower seat height (18 inches from floor) so that children’s feet can touch the ground. Colorful composite panels in blue, green, pink, or yellow make the chair less intimidating – children are more willing to sit in a chair that looks like it was made for them. The chair includes a five-point safety harness (plastic buckles) to prevent the child from standing up or climbing out during transport. The push handles are lower (34 inches from floor) to accommodate shorter staff members or parents who may assist with transport. The rear wheels are 20 inches – smaller than adult wheels – to keep the chair proportional to the child’s size while still allowing self-propulsion for older children.
This wheelchair is designed for pediatric MRI facilities, children’s hospitals, and general hospitals that image children. Pediatric patients often have difficulty lying still during MRI, and anxiety is a major barrier to successful scanning. Allowing a child to remain in a familiar, comfortable wheelchair until the last possible moment reduces anxiety. The chair can be used to transport the child from the hospital room or waiting area to the MRI suite, and the child can then be transferred to the scanner table using a slide board or by being lifted by a parent. For children who require sedation, the wheelchair can be used to transport the sedated child to the scanner – the five-point harness keeps the child secure even if they are floppy from sedation.
