The Low-Back Transport Non-Magnetic MRI Wheelchair is designed with a backrest height of only 12 inches – significantly lower than the standard 16-18 inches. This low backrest allows MRI staff to easily access the patient’s upper back and shoulders for tasks such as removing a gown, placing a monitoring lead, or positioning a shoulder coil. The low backrest also makes it easier for patients to transfer laterally onto the MRI table, as there is no backrest to lean against or climb over. Despite the low backrest, the chair remains safe for transport because the patient’s center of gravity is low (seat height 19 inches) and the chair has a wide wheelbase. The chair includes a removable headrest (8 inches tall) that can be attached when additional head support is needed.

This wheelchair is specifically for MRI suites where patients are transferred from the wheelchair directly to the scanner table. The low backrest eliminates a common obstacle: the patient’s gown or clothing can get caught on a standard backrest during transfer, and the patient may have to twist around the backrest to position themselves. With a low backrest, the patient can simply slide laterally onto the table. The chair is also useful for patients with shoulder injuries or back who find it ful to lean against a standard backrest. The removable headrest allows the chair to be used for patients who need head support (e.g., those with cervical spine issues) and then removed for patients who do not.
